Results For 2022 Brake Safety Week Are In

Law enforcement officials throughout North America placed 5,059 commercial motor vehicles out of service for brake-related violations during this year’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Brake Safety Week, August 21-27. That figure accounts for 13.3% of the 38,117 commercial vehicles that were inspected during the annual safety blitz, which focuses specifically on reducing brake-related crashes by conducting inspections and identifying and removing unsafe commercial motor vehicles from roadways.

According to data released from the CVSA, 34,402 inspections were administered in the U.S., resulting in 4,664 vehicles (13.6%) being removed from the road for brake-related violations. In Mexico, 44, or 2.5%, of the 1,740 commercial motor vehicles inspected were placed out of service for brake-related violations; while in Canada, 1,975 inspections were conducted, and the brake-related out-of-service rate was 17.8% (351).

Commercial motor vehicle inspectors use the CVSA’s North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria to identify critical vehicle inspection item violations that are concerning enough to warrant removing that vehicle from traveling on roadways until those conditions have been repaired.

During this year’s Brake Safety Week, inspectors also reported a total of 6,305 hose chafing violations, which are a common brake-related violation and was the focus area for the 2022 event. Two tables that detail the reported brake hose chafing violations by severity and percentages of total brake hose chafing violations can be viewed on the CVSA website

Next year’s Brake Safety Week is scheduled for August 20-26, 2023.
