Are Your Braking Systems in Compliance?

Brake Safety Week Is Aug 21-27

It's almost time for Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA's) annual Brake Safety Week, which is scheduled for August 21-27, 2022.

Every year, for Brake Safety Week, law enforcement jurisdictions in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. conduct North American Standard Level I and V Inspections of commercial motor vehicles and drivers at fixed weigh stations, temporary pop-up inspection sites and during roving roadway patrols, paying special attention to brake components and systems. Vehicles with critical vehicle inspection violation items identified in the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria will be restricted from traveling until those violations are corrected. Commercial vehicles that pass eligible inspections may receive a passed-inspection CVSA decal.

Participating jurisdictions will capture and report data on the inspections and this year’s special focus area—brake hose/tubing chafing violations—to the CVSA. The results will be released in the fall.

Brake-related violations comprise the largest percentage of all out-of-service vehicle violations cited during roadside inspections, and according to 2021 International Roadcheck data, brake systems and brake adjustment violations accounted for 38.9% of all vehicle out-of-service violations. That’s more than any other vehicle violation category. Last year’s Brake Safety Week resulted in 12% of the 35,764 commercial motor vehicles inspected being placed out of service due to critical brake-related inspection item conditions.

CVSA has created a 2022 Brake Safety Week flyer with 10 tips for drivers/operators to avoid brake hose or tubing violations. The flyer can be downloaded in EnglishFrench or Spanish.

Brake Safety Week is part of law enforcement’s effort to reduce brake-related crashes by conducting roadside inspections and identifying and removing unsafe commercial motor vehicles from roadways.
