2023 International Roadcheck Set for May 16-18

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced the dates for this year’s International Roadcheck. The annual high-visibility blitz of commercial vehicle inspections will take place May 16-18, with a focus on anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement.

During the three-day International Roadcheck, CVSA-certified inspectors across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will conduct North American Standard Inspections of commercial motor vehicles and drivers at weigh and inspection stations, along roadways, and at temporary inspection sites. This year, enforcement personnel will be paying extra attention to ABS and cargo securement to highlight the importance of those aspects of vehicle safety. While ABS violations are not out-of-service violations, these systems play a critical role in reducing the risk of collisions by preventing the wheels from locking up or skidding, allowing a driver to maintain control of the vehicle while braking. In addition, improper cargo securement poses a serious risk to drivers and other motorists by adversely affecting the vehicle’s maneuverability, or worse, causing unsecured loads to fall, resulting in traffic hazards, and vehicle collisions.

Vehicles that successfully pass inspection during the International Roadcheck may receive a CVSA decal. Generally speaking, a vehicle with a valid CVSA decal will not be re-inspected during the three months while the decal is valid. If, however, inspectors identify critical out-of-service violations, outlined in the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria, the driver or vehicle will be restricted from travel until those violations or conditions are addressed.

To help motor carriers and drivers prepare for this year’s enforcement initiative, the CVSA has created a 2023 International Roadcheck informational flyer on ABS and cargo securement in English, French and Spanish.
